The Capital Ukrainian festival is offering you another Ukrainian classical-crossover event in partnership with the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival. What you will see are more strings and operatic voice merging with traditional music of their homeland.

So, who’s performing?

Vasyl Popadiuk: This festival favourite is a classically trained violinist born in Lviv, Ukraine but now calls Ottawa home. Often found leading his bigger ensemble, Papa Duke, this virtuoso can bust out classic pop, rock, jazz and traditional Slavic and gypsy music as well as he can a classical concerto. His work has complimented the National Ballet of Canada and he continues to impress worldwide audience performing a festivals in the USA, Italy, Mexico, and Ukraine.

Pavlo Fondera: He’s a singer! He’s a choirmaster! He’s a librettist, poet and playwright! Best of all, he’s coming to the Capital Ukrainian festival. Born in Zhytomyr, Ukraine, Fondera is an accomplished vocal performer and he has the educational paperwork to prove it! He holds degrees from Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts in both choir conducting and vocal performance. He’s performed both as a choir member and soloist in Kredo, Kalyna and the Kyiv symphonic orchestra and choir, to name a few. He current resides in Toronto and is the Choirmaster/conductor for Canadian Bandurist Capella and the artistic director for the Prometheus male choir.

The Prometheus Male Choir: Speaking of which, Fondera brings the entire choir with him to really show you how beautiful those church acoustics are.

Kleztory: We really blur the lines between classical and tradition with the fusion sounds of Kleztory. This group creates a mosaic of culture with music transitioning from classical, jazz, country, blues and folk with ease. When you toss in the spice of klezmer, you see how these shows become emotionally charged ones. Their diverse cultural backgrounds, passion, experience and dedication make the band truly one of the most dynamic traditional klezmer ensembles in the world today.
